The Top Ten Reasons Why You Should Run for Office in the May Elections by Bob Goldberg
10. To kick the bums out. 9. You keep complaining about how bad government, schools, health care centers, fire departments, water conservation districts, the port and college are – so, you need to see if you can do better. 8. If you don’t, maybe no one will, and the poor folks in those offices won’t get a break. (Or the position may go vacant, or they may pick someone even worse!) 7. You really watch too much TV, and you need to break it up with some meetings. 6. If you don’t participate, then the whole thing will be a waste of money – whose money? Your money. 5. Face it – you want the power. (It’s definitely not for the money.) Yeah, and your picture in the paper, and your voice on the radio, and you just love the attention... 4. It’s actually fun to get out and talk with your neighbors, and find out what they think of whatever institution is behind the position you’re running for. No, really, it is. 3. You’re not qualified to do anything else. (Hey, all you need is do is fill out a 2-page application, which asks your contact info, education, and current job, and if you’re living where you need to live, and are over 18, you’re in the running!) 2. You’ve been trying to figure out how to serve your community for years, and you’ve run out of ideas.
1. So I don’t have to! The last day to file for office is March 19th, so if you haven’t already, either get your butt down to the county offices (see below for addresses), or download the appropriate forms from the county websites (see below), fill them out, pay 10 bucks, and start your campaign! At the time of writing, there are only 6 contested races in Clatsop County, and only 1 in Tillamook County. All the remaining races have either only one candidate running, or none. So find someone you’d like to boot out. Go for it! Get your testosterone rush, and participate in the very core of democracy – contested elections! And don’t be afraid to put your name in the hat even if no one else has yet. If you’re lucky, someone will see your name there before the 19th, and file to run against you. Then you can run that campaign you’ve always wanted to, and whip the opposition! Clatsop County Elections Department Tillamook County Elections |
