Santa Radios from the North Pole

When Santa arrives at noon, he will be greeted by a bagpiper and directors of the Astoria Children’s Museum and the gift fair. Then, he’s ready to pose for pictures with children and pets until 4:00 pm.

With nonprofits from throughout the county participating, shoppers may make donations for nearly anyone on their gift list. You can donate to the rehabilitation of wildlife on the north coast in the name of someone who loves helping animals, support the arts in the names of art lovers, donate to children’s organizations, and give to organizations that provide food and services of all kinds, education and entertainment to the people, the animals, the land and waters of our county.

Most of the participating nonprofits are tax-exempt 501c3 organizations, so donations may be partly or fully tax-deductible, as well.

The Titanic Lifeboat Academy, sponsor of the event, encourages everyone to stop by, visit with Santa, and see the incredible work being done by our areas’ volunteer organizations. TLA also provides information about the importance of supporting our local economy through donations to nonprofits and purchases from local merchants.

SIXTH ANNUAL HOLIDAY ABUNDANCE SWAP
Friday, November 28, 2 PM
Grace Episcopal Church Parish Hall
1545 Franklin Ave, Astoria
Something Really, Really Different!

The Holidays are here again, and millions of Americans will be stressed out and overspent buying billions of dollars of new stuff, created with new resources from the earth. But some of the good stuff we already have isn’t being well used or fully enjoyed. And giving gifts for the holidays is fun. Most of us want to continue giving gifts.

This is it.

Find 2 to 5 quality items in your home, shop, or office that someone would enjoy as a gift, and bring them to the Abundance Swap! Don’t just drop them off--bring the present of your presence. Stick around to visit, tell a story about what you brought, and find some things that you’d like to take away to give as gifts to others, or for yourself. Then, use the gifts to take home to reduce your new gift purchases.

This will be our own Holiday shopping event, that includes no money and no new demands on resources. For more information, call 503-325-1935.

4TH ANNUAL MANZANITA ALTERNATIVE GIFT MARKET
Sunday, December 7, 10am-4pm
Pine Grove Community Center, Manzanita
Plant a Tree in Haiti!

The Fourth Annual Alternative Gift Market provides many globally minded shoppers with gifts for everyone on their list. For the past 3 years the Alternative Gift Market (AGM) has gathered together over 40 local and global nonprofit organizations offering shoppers a chance to turn a tax deductible donation into a gift for a friend or family member. The gifts can be made in any amount to projects that range from planting trees in deforested Haiti to helping women in crisis in Tillamook County.

“In the past three years we have raised almost $20,000 for medical supplies and services, environmental protection, children’s health, human rights, affordable housing and peace and education. It is amazing how much our money can do overseas to help those in need.” Says Ginger Salkowski the organizer of the market since 2005.”

At the AGM, gifts come in the form of donations made to reputable non profit projects. A shopper might donate funds that will purchase a goat for an Ethiopian family affected by AIDS, or make a donation toward planting trees at a local Land Trust. After making your donation, shoppers receive an attractive hand inscribed gift card that you can then give to a loved one informing them that a unique present given in his or her honor. The whole process takes place in a festive market atmosphere staffed by volunteers representing various local and international nonprofit agencies.

Salkowski, whose fair trade business It’s Only Fair and an event sponsor, is confident that this market will out do all the others, “When times are hard in America we still have access to resources that millions in developing countries desperately need. I think once people realize that they can provide a permanent clean water supply to a village in Peru for the price of a new video game, their heart opens and they remember the true spirit of the holidays is to love and help those in need.”

To volunteer to help with the Alternative Gift Market on December 7th, please contact 503-368-3044 or email fairtradediva@yahoo.com. For folks who cannot attend the Dec. 7th Market, Alternative Gifts can also be purchased online at www.altgifts.org.
